PRESIDENT'S STATEMENT

Statement of former Prime Minister and JD (S) President Shri H D Deve Gowda, on the Delhi serial blasts

Slams Government; Demands Emergency Parliament Session to discuss the issue

Posted: Sep 14, 2008

I am shocked and distressed to learn about the loss of precious lives and injuries caused by the serial bomb blasts in the national capital. The inhuman and barbaric attack on innocent people is an act of cowardice which should be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

Though this is not the time to engage in blame game, the impunity with which the terrorists are carrying out their mission across the country including the heart of the national capital at regular intervals is a reflection on the competence and ability of the ruling coalition to combat this growing menace.

It is sad that a Government which is willing to put even the nation’s sovereignty and its own survival at stake for the sake of the so-called ‘energy security’ is unable to safeguard even the Constitutional right to life of its citizens. It seems to be too preoccupied with the pursuit of its own agenda to spare time for issues such as national security and integrity.

Communal forces are raising their ugly head with their cadres running amuck in states like Orissa and Karnataka. Kashmir is on the boil like never before and Naxalites are having a field day in several states. One is tempted to ask where is the Government? Have we actually become a soft state and a banana republic?

The BJP too cannot occupy a high moral ground as even tougher anti-terror laws failed to prevent even worst terror strikes during its regime.

The Government should convene an emergency session of Parliament to discuss this aggression on the nation and evolve a political consensus to put up a unified resistance against the forces of communalism and terrorism, which are feeding each other and threatening to tear apart the nation’s fragile secular social fabric.

My heart goes out to the families of the victims and the injured and I pray to the Almighty to give them the strength to overcome the tragedy. I appeal to the people of Delhi and other parts of the country to main peace and communal harmony at all costs and thereby defeat the nefarious designs of the nation’s enemies.

The culprits behind these dastardly attacks should be brought to book without delay.
